About Me

Hello! My name is Ariana González and I am a journalism student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst as a Political Science and Journalism double major.

I moved to Massachusetts from Puerto Rico when I was 14 years old, a semester into my freshman year of high school. While this experience posed many challenges for me, it is the thing that got me into writing. I began writing more seriously when I moved to the United States as I tried to cope with the move, and understand the world around me.

My sophomore year of high school, I joined a pre-college summer program at Brown University where I was introduced to non-fiction narrative writing. From this program came my first essays. I mostly talked about my experience growing up and my culture.

This would later become a theme when I started studying at the University of Massachusetts Amherst as a journalism student. My first articles written for the Daily Collegian were mostly about Hispanic culture and the Puerto Rican diasporic experience.

Throughout this time, I also began taking my first political science course on comparative politics. This class sparked a lot of new ideas that influenced my writing and I began to pursue Political Science as a secondary major.

Since I began school in 2021, I have developed a long list of works through my time interning for Amherst Media and El Mundo Boston and working for the Daily Collegian and WMUA News. I have also freelanced articles for the Pasquines publication, which focuses on highlighting news within the U.S. Territories.
